Cost - Affordable TBI Fuel Injection

When I got the Jeep, it ran OK but the Previous Owner that I got it from stated
that every couple years he had to put a new carburetor on it or had to rebuild the old one. I took it with a
grain of salt, but I realized that once the rebuild was complete that I was having issues with the engine not
running right. It was running rich and I couldn't seem to get it to run right. The carburetor has sit for
about 2 years during the build up, so the gas that was in it had turned to varnish and it really needed to be
rebuilt.
I started doing some research on new carburetors, intakes, etc. and saw that for what I wanted to do; I might
be facing a similar situation if I went with a stock set up. The Truck Avenger type carburetors were pretty
expensive, but supposedly worked good in steeper angle and off camber situations. So, I decided that I would
look into fuel injection. I did a lot of reading about conversions and it really interested me since I had
never attempted anything as complicated as this before.
I ended up ordering a full system from Affordable Fuel Injection. All the info on the write-up of the build-up
can be seen here. The kit came with a lot of
things, but it was missing a few parts to complete the build-up. What you see below is a list of all the
parts that I didn't have and had to get. Quadratec
was a big part of the gasket ordering as well during this build-up.
This build-up is not for the faint of heart and/or the impatient type. I am the latter. It took a long time
and frustration followed suit on pretty much every step of the build-up. My advice up front is to know
EXACTLY what you have in your rig before you start. I thought that the intake that I had was going to
work, but I was WAY, WAY off on that assumption.

Cost - Offset

| To offset the cost of the buildup, I sold off some of the parts that I
removed during the fuel injection installation. I sold the old Carburetor, Spark Plug Wires, and finally
the Distributor. I tried to sell the Intake Manifold as well, but that apparently was not desired by the eBay
community at the time. I may sell it for scrap metal since it weighs in at 60 lbs.

Conclusions

The total time should be around 20 hours all said and done. That being said,
I spent some time doing some research into what type of intake would be the best after I discovered that the
one I had wasn't going to work.
As you can see, the offset of $100.00 for selling the old parts from the engine helped with the project
somewhat, but as you can see by the final price, this is not a cheap upgrade. When the cost was $1395.00 on
the website, I thought, cool, under $1400.00 for fuel injection is a good price. In the end, the price went up
quite a bit more. After all my running around and paying for the eBay costs and Paypal fees, I was able to
still spend an additional $280.00 over what I had originally intended to spend.
Don't get me wrong; I am VERY, VERY happy that I did this upgrade. The throttle response is great and I am
still figuring out the gas mileage, but that seems to have improved quite a bit as well. I will be putting
up a link on the gas mileage I was getting vs. what I am getting now in a few weeks once I drive the rig
around a bit more to figure it out.
Be prepared to spend some time tweaking the installation as well. Lay out your wires in a nice clean way and
cover them up with wire loom to protect them. Installing the temperature sensor as well as the O2 sensor
will take some doing as well. This is where the 20 hours really adds up. The preparation really takes a lot
of time, but in the end, it is well worth it. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions on it.
