| Cost - Obtain Vehicle |

Most CJ's that are 20-30 years old can be obtained for around $2500-$3500 if you
are to look at the eBay auction site
or in the local trade rags. Classifieds are good to and there are a few of
them that are across the country so you can find something in your area quite easily. That being said, this
price can go up to $10,000 very easily if the previous owner has put a lot of time, effort, and after market
stuff on the rig. This is very common, but if you haggle, you can usually get the owner down from the steep
asking price. Jeeps are one of the older type vehicles that are sought after, but that invested time and money
are never recuperated. Remember that this is a love affair, not an investment. If you want an investment, you
have to go with something other then a Jeep.
This Jeep had to be trailered 400 miles behind a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 on a rented UHaul trailer. The trailer
required a different hitch that the Dodge didn't have. Keep in mind also that the route that is taken will have
to be on roads that allow for trailers. This will get you into trouble if you aren't careful.
You can also ship the Jeep to you if it is coming from cross-country or down south. These Jeeps typically are
in better shape with less rust and frame problems, but keep in mind that a typical shipping company will
charge upwards of $1000.00 to ship it to your home depending on mileage and type of shipping (covered, open).

This is what was the acquisition cost for a Jeep that had a straight frame, very
little body rust, a remanufactured engine, a rebuilt transmission, semi-tread tires, oversize tires, and the
usual amount of aftermarket components that were included with it. This came with very little documentation and
the interior was destroyed. The Jeep ran, but was in need of fluid changing and a tune-up. The initial $1725.00
acquisition cost well exceeded that in time and cost.
I realize that no one is probably as anal as I am in keeping tabs on costs, but if you don't, what you think you
are spending and what you are actually spending will far exceed what you think. I was trying to keep this under
5 grand after the purchase cost. This went far and above it with tool cost, machining, and other non-Jeep
related costs. Remember that you have to pay for help as well. This payment is in the form of beer, food, and
other refreshments, not to mention the reciprocation that you might have to do later on in life to help them
out.
