Cost - One-Piece Axle Installation

A one-piece axle installation contains many hidden costs. These costs are hidden in the fact that to do this right, it will require a machine shop to press on the axle bearings to the shaft once you get the old backing plate off the existing installation.

The actual cost will reflect the fact that you need some specialty brake drum tools. The tools that you will need to complete the project are brake drum spoon, brake drum spring compressor, t-bar oil seal remover and finally some grease, rags, and a Jeep manual.

Cost - Offset

To offset the cost of the buildup, I sold off the old axles. There weren't really any more parts that could be sold during the build-up of this section. I had already bought new brake parts and the old parts were damaged when the axle was put up on end and gear oil contaminated all the parts. The shoes were almost toasted anyways and the wheel cylinders weren't exactly in working condition. The brake lines and brake hose were also shot as well. You might have better luck selling stuff but I didn't.

Conclusions

The total time should be around 4 hours all said and done. That being said, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to separate the hub from the axle on the original setup before realizing that you don't need to do this.

As you can see, the offset of the nearly $20.00 for selling the old axles helped with the project slightly. Keep in mind that you will need cleaners as well to help this along. Brake cleaner mainly as well as hand cleaner as well as grease and rags. All this said and done can be had for $340.00 or less depending on what you replace with new parts. Also, you can get even better 1-piece axles that cost more or you can go a cheaper route with axles that cost around $200.00. It is up to you and what you decide.
