| Cost - "Jeep" Finned Valve Cover Installation |
| |
When I got the Jeep, it had some chrome valve covers on it that leaked pretty
well. I also had gotten some stock valve covers because I wanted the rounded look of the stock covers on
the AMC 304. Man was I way off on that assumption. 30 years of heat, wear, and tear really do a number to
the valve covers. They were more busted then most of the amateurs at the world poker tour Texas hold'em
tournament. Anyway, now that I want to play poker badly, back to the story. I decided to get some new valve
covers to help dress up the engine compartment, but at the same time eliminate a lot of the leaks that I was
seeing.
I ended up ordering a set of valve covers (part# 51104 11 07) from
Quadratec
and I waited for them to come in so they could be installed. The install is very straightforward and requires
some basic hand tools. There are no hidden costs with this installation aside from some gasket sealer to help
seal the cork gaskets to the engine block as well as the valve covers.

| To offset the cost of the buildup, I sold off the chrome valve covers as
well as the stock purchased valve covers I had gotten. They were in rough shape, so they only netted 25
for the 2 pairs.

| Conclusions |

The total time should be around 2 hours all said and done. That being said,
I spent some time trying to get these taken off and installed without removing tons of stuff from the engine.
This was easier said then done. Take your time and you should be able to get this done a lot quicker if you
remove everything first and then do the job.
As you can see, the offset of the nearly $25.00 for selling the old sets of valve covers helped with the project
slightly. Keep in mind that you will need to let this set up and dry before you start up the motor. If you
don't allow it to dry, you may get some leaks. All said and done can be had for around $150.00 or less
depending on what style of valve covers you purchase. I opted for the "Jeep" emblazoned logo on the valve
covers. Remember, it is up to you and what you decide to do with your Jeep to personalize it.
