Project "Reclamation" a.k.a Project "CJ4C" - part #2

 1  2  3  4  5  6

(02.02.13) I started off yesterday by taking the bumper out and stripping it completely down to bare metal, and then cleaning it and then getting some color on it. Two coats of black rust prevention paint followed by 2 coats of clear make it look pretty nice. I also took off the lense covers since we will be replacing the lights with new H4 replacement/conversions and they were looking a little ragged, so I painted and cleared them up as well.

One thing that has bugged me since I saw this Jeep was the mixture of stainless and non-stainless parts on the Jeep. Yes, I have issues, but these are understandable ones. I hate rust and when it is near or on a CJ, it is even worse. So, I had also noticed the mixture of parts in the windshield hinges.. so I wanted a consistent look. So, removing stainless bolts from the hinges and putting them with the hood hinges, there is now a nice consistent look of stainless steel parts where they should be. Button heads on the windshield hinges and bolts on the hood. I think it looks great. It is a small thing, but those add up.

So, I am doing a lot of these little projects now because I don't have all the parts I need to get the rest of it done. Basically 4wd.com really screwed up when it changed it's business model and now I will no longer be a client of theris. The shackles and the body lift kit has taken 11 business days so far, 15 days total and I was told the parts will ship on Tuesday, the 12th business day. The GUARANTEE said 7-10 days. This is the problem with retailers these days, they don't hold inventory, the Just-In-Time it, and rely and in a sense blame the manufacturers when they don't ship them. It saves them time, money and liability, it is a joke. But, like I said, I won't order from them anymore, if you choose to do so, it is your call, I have removed all advertisting for them from the website as well.

Now that I am done and got off my soapbox, I went ahead and started to put the OEM fender flares on. They aren't super black and are a little sunfaded, but I will address that later, I wanted to get the holes drilled and them on to begin with now so I didn't have to do all this at the end. All in all the backs came out well, I like it.

Today I plan on going out and getting a few things done... put the lower lights back in, get the glove box replacement in, start on the front five point harness seat belts, and hopefull have this thing up on jack stands so I can start to remove the shackles and pitman arm. We will see, it is a lot to ask, but we will see how far we get.

(02.04.13) Since the parts haven't arrived yet, I tackled a few things that were on the list. I first put together the license plate and then put the lower covers on and mocked it all in place so we could see what it will look like when it is done. The glove box was up next and that took some finessing to get it in there and get all the bolt/screws in there. All in all, it is done... marked off the list and onto the next thing, which was the front fender flares. It was a very similar process to the rears, tape them up to protect, put them in place, mark them, drill, and assemble... the assembly part takes the longest.

Next up we moved onto the removal of the seat belts. This is a time in the project where I call it the "black hole" or "time burglars" because you look up and 2 hours have gone by and you have 3 of the 4 stripped out bolts in your hand, but not a whole lot to show for it. I am glad we are putting in new restraints though, those bolts are scary, they went right in the recycle pile and I hope to use the seat belts that I took out in the rear if I can find a way to mount them and have them be long enough. I hope to get back to the five point harness install tonight or tomorrow. The last picture is the bolt that was holding the driver side belt in place... yes, that is a carriage bolt, no it is not hardened, yes I had to cut it out, and no it is not going back in. We will use the sold eye bolt mounts that come with the kit.

(02.05.13) Not a whole lot to report, but I was able to get a few things done. Some, but not all the parts have come in that I ordered up. I was able to get the mirrors on, I got the headlight conversion back in with the painted protective lenses. I then moved onto the shackles which were a major PITA... but I am not one to back down. I followed that up this evening and got all the nuts off and the bolts are broken loose, so hopefully in the next couple evenings I can acutally get the shackles off and put a more sensible set on. I also went and got new hardware for the front bumpers as well as some more paint for the hooks. I am looking forward to getting the front end buttoned up to see how it all looks!
