Project "Moab" a.k.a "Just a Tub Swap" - part #12

(07/14/09) Each day we get closer to the finish line. Today was the day that the dash went under the knife. There were some missing pieces on the dash and some gauges that didn't work, not to mention the speakers that were totally trashed, but they all came out eventually and the prep work began. The YJ tub is a little off in spots, so some holes need to be made larger and some need to be moved, so that was all done on the body and then it was stripped, sanded, and primed.

The old tailgate can't be used as is, so I had another one that we are going to use, but there are some pieces of the old one that need to go on the new one, so that was taken off and sized up and transferred and then the stripping began on that as the paint flowed onto the dash. Clear coat came after and then the grille was up.

When the UPS guy showed up, I went to town on putting the bushings into the CJ torque arm and then getting that all tightened down on the skid plate. That took some doing, but we are good to go with the transmission. The NV3550 swap was a bit more then advertised, but aside from the hydraulic clutch needing to go in, I think we are in good shape.

After the bushings, the tailgate was finished up and almost read for paint and the grille received some attention. In the end, I ran out of time and the grille just has one coat of paint. I need to get a bit more paint and primer, but all in all, hopefully today the tailgate will be finished, as will the grille and we can move onto the fenders as they need some attention.

(07/15/09) A lot of paint, a lot of time drying, then moving onto the body and starting on the interior is what was tackled today. Also a lot of running back and forth to the store to get miscellaneous items for doing all that and then we move onto the next thing.

Tomorrow, we will hopefully get more done with the inside of the tub and some of the engine bay area, maybe even the front grille on, who knows. We will see how it goes. The fenders needs some work and the dash has to be put back together, so basically there is a ton of stuff to do, hopefully by the end of the weekend we will be in good shape to get her moving again... only time will tell.

(07/16/09) The tailgate was the first thing that I put back together yesterday. Once that was done, I took apart the heater to see what could be done with the part that was broken. I have a few emails/questions into people to see if I can locate another part. After that, the dash was on tap. In the picture, you can see all the new parts that went into the dash, the old parts were cleaned up and joined the new ones and the dash is ready to go in as well. That might happen today, it all depends on how far we get with the rest of the stuff.

I had 2 young birds join me in the garage for a couple hours. They had just left the nest and weren't really sure what was going on. I tried to catch them, but they kept flying up on top of the garage and behind the fridge. They were chirping the whole time, so if the rear lights don't work... well, you know why. LOL.

Actually the rear lights did light up when I put power to them and that is when I started in on the pedals. The emergency brake really needed some attention after I put in the headlight switch on the floor. Wranglers don't have those, so you have to put it in yourself.

Realizing I am going to need power today, I took the Wrangler battery tray and cut it down so it would look more like the CJ one. I then blasted it, sanded it, primed it, and finally painted it. While I was waiting for paint to dry, I drilled the hole in the firewall for the speedometer cable. I always seem to forget that when I am doing all the mock up. It needs to accept the CJ speedometer cable and the Wrangler tub doesn't allow for that.

So, all in all, a busy day and hopefully a lot more busy today. I hope to have a lot more stuff bolted onto the rig and hopefully a list of things that we need to order up to finish this thing off. We should be able to strip the fenders of their stuff as well and I can go to work on fixing the one dented one. Also up is the grille shell, as that needs to be put back together with all of its new light assemblies.
